VINYL WRAP

Vinyl wrap, vinyl what ?
For some of our potential clients reading this you will know exactly what we mean when we say ‘vinyl wrap’. It could very well be the reason you are currently thinking of ways to renovate your kitchen! As for our other clients, you could find this blog very interesting as it might answer some questions as to why you have cracks appearing on your kitchen cupboard doors. The reason we are focusing this post on vinyl wrap is so that everyone knows we have an efficient service that can update your kitchen in one week and fix those cracks.

So we want to start at the beginning and explain what ‘vinyl wrap’ is so we are all on the same page.

We had to do some research to explain and this is what we found :
They vinyl product itself is essentially a thin, flexible plastic that is mouldable when heated. Vinyl wrap or thermo-formed doors are created by wrapping a MDF door substrate (moisture resistant board) with a vinyl coating using a vacuum, glue and heat process. The vinyl is wrapped across the front of the door, and around all edges in one continuous piece. The back of the door is usually melamine.

BAD GLUE
Unfortunately around 10 years ago, a poor batch of glue (used to attach the vinyl to the MDF board) circulated through the whole industry meaning that people were having issues of delamination across the country. If the issue hadn’t popped up at the time, then there is a good chance it has now. Most of the vinyl wrap kitchens we work with have been affected by cracking or delamination. Even though the original glue issue was rectified delamination is still a concern but for different reasons. The areas of the kitchen most at risk of this happening are those exposed to heat greater than 80 degrees (e.g. cupboards over the kettle or cooktop), handle-less drawers where there is constant rubbing, or in a situation where there has been poor supplier workmanship.

Don’t stress we have got good news……………we are able to help and help well!

First let’s have a look at what we have been talking about by taking you into our most recent, Seacliff project. We have put together this before video for you.

#1

Flick, flick, flick and in the case of this project all the vinyl wrap was removed in a couple of hours, the glue residue sanded off and we are left with a perfect MDF door to REUSE and RESURFACE.

Part of our process when working on projects is to remove all the doors and resurface them off site, whilst we complete other parts of the project on site. Then in the words of one of our clients we work like magicians and magically put it all back together – and present you with your revamped kitchen.

This project shows us all that looking at projects differently can provide an excellent solution rather than just assuming everything needs to be ripped out. It is an important lesson especially for people focusing on property investment in how to initate cosmetic changes to maintain the value of a property without over capitilising.

The key to our resurfacing being the best solution for this project lies in the fact the problems all revolved around the original finish on the doors and not the layout or the functionality of the kitchen. Fortunately our team at Retro Revamp have the skills to perfeclty rectify it at a fraction of the cost of starting again.
